In This Guide
There is no single best time to visit Goa. There is only the best time for your group. A group of twenty-year-olds who want nightlife and water sports should go in winter. A group of wellness-focused women in their forties might prefer the monsoon, when rates drop 60 percent and the spa resorts offer their best packages. A corporate group running a MICE event needs dry weather and open venues, which means winter or shoulder season. A college group on a tight budget can get 40 to 70 percent savings by travelling in off-season.
What makes this guide different from the generic "best time to visit Goa" articles online is that it is written specifically for groups. Group travel has different constraints from individual travel. Group pricing works differently across seasons. Group availability of hotels, transport and activities changes dramatically. And the dynamics of a group trip can be ruined by the wrong season just as easily as by the wrong hotel.
This is the guide we use at GoaThrills when we advise groups on when to travel. Every recommendation is based on real data from hundreds of group trips we have run across all seasons. If you want us to recommend the best window for your specific group, message us on WhatsApp with your group size, budget and what the group wants to do. We will tell you honestly which months work and which do not.
1. The three seasons in Goa
Goa has three distinct seasons, and each has its own character, cost structure and group suitability.
| Season | Months | Price Level | Crowd Level | Activities |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Peak Season | Mid-Nov to Mid-Feb | Highest (2 to 4x off-season) | Very High | All activities available |
| Shoulder Season | Oct, Mar, Apr | Moderate (1.2 to 1.8x off-season) | Moderate | Most activities available |
| Off Season | Jun to Sep | Lowest (40 to 70 percent discount) | Very Low | Water sports and beach activities suspended |
| Transition | May | Moderate to Low | Low | Water sports winding down |
For groups, the choice between these seasons is not just about weather. It is about what the group wants to do, how much the group wants to spend, and how much the group cares about crowds. This guide walks through each month in detail.
2. Winter months (November to February)
Winter is the classic Goa season. The weather is dry, the skies are clear, the sea is calm, and everything is open. This is when most groups want to travel, and it is also when everything costs the most.
November
November marks the beginning of peak season. The monsoon has just ended, the landscape is still lush green, and the weather is pleasant. Beach shacks reopen, water sports resume, and nightlife starts picking up. By late November, prices start climbing toward their December peak.
December
December is the busiest month in Goa. Christmas and New Year bring the highest hotel rates of the year, peak crowds, and the best nightlife. If your group wants the ultimate Goa experience with festive energy, December is the month. But be prepared for high prices and limited availability. Book 4 to 6 months in advance.
January
January is the sweet spot of peak season. The festive rush has passed, but the weather is still perfect. Crowds are slightly lower than December, hotel rates have come down from their New Year peak, and all activities are fully operational. For groups that want peak-season quality without December prices, January is the best choice.
February
February is the last month of peak season. The weather is still excellent, crowds start thinning, and rates begin to soften slightly. February is a good compromise for groups that want peak-season quality at slightly lower prices. The Goa Carnival usually happens in February, which adds a cultural element to the trip.
3. Summer months (March to May)
Summer in Goa is hot and humid, but this is also shoulder season for the first two months, which means excellent value for groups that can handle the heat.
March
March is the last month of good weather before summer heat takes over. Prices drop significantly from February, crowds thin out, and all activities are still operational. For groups that want good weather at a manageable price, March is excellent. The Shigmo festival usually happens in March, which is Goa's traditional spring festival.
April
April is warm and getting warmer. The sea is still calm, water sports are running, and most beach shacks are open. This is a great month for groups that prioritize budget without compromising too much on experience. Rates are significantly lower than peak season. Book early for the Easter weekend if your group is travelling then.
May
May is the hottest month in Goa, with temperatures regularly touching 35 degrees. Beach shacks start closing, water sports wind down, and the pre-monsoon humidity sets in. The upside is that prices start dropping significantly. May is a good value month for groups that can tolerate the heat and do not mind limited beach activities.
4. Monsoon months (June to September)
Monsoon is the least understood season in Goa for group tours. It is either the best value trip your group ever takes, or the wrong choice entirely, depending on what your group actually wants.
June
June marks the official start of monsoon. Heavy rain, lush green landscapes, and dramatic waterfalls. Water sports are suspended, beach swimming is not recommended, and many beach shacks are closed. But hotel rates drop 50 to 70 percent, and this is the best time for groups interested in nature, wellness, and monsoon experiences.
July
July is peak monsoon. Rain is heaviest, waterfalls are spectacular, and Goa becomes a completely different destination. Hotels offer their best rates of the year. Wellness retreats, spice plantation tours, and monsoon-focused experiences thrive. This is not the month for beach holidays, but it is ideal for groups that want a genuinely different Goa.
August
August sees monsoon in full force with occasional breaks. Independence Day long weekend brings a small spike in visitors, but overall crowds are still low. Prices remain at their annual lows. Best for nature-focused trips, wellness retreats, and groups looking to save significantly on their Goa trip.
September
September is the tail end of monsoon. Rain continues but is less intense, and occasionally the sun breaks through. Prices remain low, and by late September, some beach shacks begin to reopen. This is the last value month before rates start climbing in October. Good for groups that want monsoon prices with slightly better weather.
5. October transition month
October
October is the transition month from monsoon to peak season. The rain stops, the sky clears, and the landscape remains lush green from the monsoon. Beach shacks begin reopening, water sports resume, and prices are still significantly below peak season. October is one of the best value months for groups that want good weather and low prices.
October is often our top recommendation for groups that want peak-season quality at shoulder-season prices. The first two weeks can still see some rain, but by mid-October, the weather is beautiful and everything is opening up. Book early because October has become increasingly popular in recent years.
6. Festivals and events calendar
Some groups specifically want to plan a trip around a festival. Others want to avoid festivals because of crowds and prices. Here is the honest breakdown.
| Festival | Typical Month | What It Is | Should Groups Plan Around It? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goa Carnival | February | Four-day festival with parades, music and floats | Yes for cultural groups, avoid if you want quiet |
| Shigmo Festival | March | Traditional Goan spring festival with folk dances | Yes for cultural groups, low impact on general travel |
| Feast of St. Francis Xavier | December 3 | Religious festival at Old Goa | Yes for religious groups, avoid for others |
| Christmas | December 25 | Christian holiday with church services and celebrations | Yes for festive groups, expect high prices |
| New Year | December 31 | Biggest party night in Goa | Yes for party groups, expensive and crowded |
| Sunburn Festival | December | Electronic music festival | Yes for music groups, book 6 months ahead |
| Diwali | Oct or Nov | Festival of lights, celebrated across Goa | Moderate interest, some events |
| Holi | March | Festival of colours with beach parties | Yes for party groups, moderate pricing |
7. Cost by month comparison
Here is a comparison of per-person costs for a 4-night mid-range group tour across different months. These exclude travel to Goa and assume a group of 10 to 20 people.
| Month | Accommodation | Transport | Activities | Total Per Person |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| November | Rs 14,000 to 22,000 | Rs 4,000 to 5,500 | Rs 4,500 to 8,000 | Rs 26,000 to 42,000 |
| December | Rs 22,000 to 40,000 | Rs 4,500 to 6,500 | Rs 5,000 to 9,000 | Rs 36,000 to 62,000 |
| January | Rs 18,000 to 30,000 | Rs 4,000 to 5,500 | Rs 4,500 to 8,000 | Rs 30,000 to 48,000 |
| February | Rs 14,000 to 24,000 | Rs 3,500 to 5,000 | Rs 4,000 to 7,000 | Rs 25,000 to 40,000 |
| March | Rs 10,000 to 18,000 | Rs 3,500 to 5,000 | Rs 3,500 to 6,500 | Rs 21,000 to 34,000 |
| April | Rs 8,000 to 15,000 | Rs 3,000 to 4,500 | Rs 3,000 to 5,500 | Rs 17,500 to 29,500 |
| May | Rs 6,000 to 12,000 | Rs 3,000 to 4,000 | Rs 2,500 to 4,500 | Rs 14,500 to 25,000 |
| June to Sep | Rs 4,500 to 9,000 | Rs 2,500 to 4,000 | Rs 1,500 to 3,500 | Rs 12,000 to 22,000 |
| October | Rs 10,000 to 17,000 | Rs 3,500 to 5,000 | Rs 3,500 to 6,000 | Rs 20,000 to 32,000 |
The difference between travelling in December and travelling in monsoon is roughly Rs 24,000 to Rs 40,000 per person for the same trip length. That is not a small number. For groups on a budget, choosing the right month is the single biggest cost lever available.
The value sweet spot
If your group wants the best balance of weather, price and availability, October and March are the months to target. You get most of the peak-season experience at 30 to 50 percent lower prices. Book 6 to 8 weeks in advance because these months are increasingly popular with smart groups.
8. Best month based on your group type
Different groups have different priorities. Here is our recommendation by group type.
| Group Type | Best Months | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Friends party group | December, January, February | Peak nightlife, best weather, full beach energy |
| College group | October, March, April | Budget-friendly, good weather, moderate crowds |
| Family with kids | December, January, May | December-January for weather, May for summer break prices |
| Couples group | November, February, October | Good weather, lower crowds than peak December |
| Senior citizens | November, February, March | Pleasant weather, lower humidity, fewer crowds |
| Ladies group | October, November, February | Good weather, safe and well-lit areas, moderate crowds |
| Corporate/MICE group | October, November, March | Dry weather, all venues open, better rates than Dec-Jan |
| Wellness group | June, July, August | Monsoon prices, best spa rates, natural surroundings at peak |
| Budget-focused group | June to September | 40 to 70 percent savings, but water sports unavailable |
| Adventure group | October to April | Water sports and outdoor activities fully operational |
9. How far in advance to book
Timing your booking is almost as important as timing your trip. Here is how far in advance we recommend groups book depending on season and size.
For groups of 10 to 30
Book 4 to 6 weeks in advance for shoulder and off-season. For peak season, book 6 to 8 weeks ahead. For Christmas and New Year, book 3 to 4 months ahead.
For groups of 30 to 100
Book 6 to 10 weeks in advance for shoulder and off-season. For peak season, book 10 to 14 weeks ahead. For Christmas and New Year, book 4 to 6 months ahead.
For groups over 100
Book 10 to 16 weeks in advance for shoulder and off-season. For peak season, book 16 to 20 weeks ahead. For Christmas and New Year, book 6 to 8 months ahead.
For corporate events and MICE
Corporate events and MICE programmes need even longer lead times because of venue availability, room blocks and production coordination. Book 12 to 16 weeks ahead for shoulder season, 16 to 24 weeks for peak season.
If flights are included
If your group needs us to book flights, add 2 to 4 weeks to all the above timelines. Group flight fares are locked in earlier, and waiting too long means the best seats and prices are gone.

10. Best time FAQ
November, December, January and February are the best months to visit Goa for a group tour. The weather is dry and pleasant, beach shacks are fully open, water sports operate regularly, and nightlife is at its peak. For groups that want good weather without the peak-season crowds and prices, October and March are also excellent choices. Groups with budget constraints should consider June to September for the lowest prices.
June to September (monsoon) is the cheapest time to visit Goa for a group. Hotels offer 40 to 70 percent discounts, transport rates are lower, and activity prices are negotiable. The trade-off is that water sports are suspended, many beach shacks are closed, and beach swimming is not recommended. Groups that want a value-focused trip with lush green landscapes should consider monsoon.
Peak season in Goa runs from mid-November to mid-February, with the highest demand around Christmas and New Year. During peak season, hotel rates are two to four times higher than off-season rates, and group availability is limited. Groups planning to travel in peak season should book 3 to 4 months in advance to secure hotels and transport. Christmas and New Year weeks require even earlier booking, often 4 to 6 months ahead.
Monsoon (June to September) is a great time for group tours if the group wants a different kind of Goa experience. The state is lush green, waterfalls run at full force, spice plantations are at their best, and hotel rates are 40 to 70 percent lower than peak season. However, beach swimming is not recommended, water sports are suspended, and outdoor activities are weather-dependent. Groups that plan indoor activities, wellness retreats, or nature-focused trips will love monsoon.
Shoulder season in Goa is October and March to April. Rates are 20 to 35 percent lower than peak season, the weather is still good, water sports operate normally, and there are fewer crowds. For groups that want a balance of good weather, manageable prices and reasonable availability, shoulder season is ideal.
For groups of 10 to 30 people, book 4 to 6 weeks in advance. For groups of 30 to 100, book 6 to 10 weeks in advance. For groups over 100 or during peak season, book 10 to 16 weeks in advance. For Christmas and New Year dates, book 4 to 6 months in advance. Flight prices rise significantly as departure date approaches, so early booking always saves money.
Key Goa festivals include the Goa Carnival (February), Shigmo festival (March), Feast of St. Francis Xavier (December), Christmas and New Year (December), Sunburn Festival (December), and Diwali (October or November). Some groups specifically plan trips around these festivals, while others prefer to avoid them because of crowds and higher prices. GoaThrills helps groups decide whether to plan around a festival or avoid peak dates.
Goa has three distinct seasons. Winter (November to February) brings dry, pleasant weather with temperatures of 20 to 32 degrees Celsius. Summer (March to May) brings hot, humid conditions with temperatures of 25 to 35 degrees Celsius. Monsoon (June to September) brings heavy rain with temperatures of 24 to 30 degrees Celsius. October is a transition month with gradually improving weather.
December and January have the best weather for a group tour to Goa. Temperatures are comfortable (20 to 30 degrees Celsius), humidity is low, skies are clear, and all activities are fully operational. However, these months are also the most expensive and crowded. For groups that want excellent weather without the peak crowds and prices, late November and early February are ideal.
GoaThrills is based in Calangute, North Goa, with a real office and a team that lives here year-round. We know which hotels are open in which season, which activities operate, and what the weather is actually like month by month. Every group gets a dedicated coordinator, itemised quote and WhatsApp support throughout the trip. That is why groups call us the best DMC for Goa.
